Sukey and the Mermaid

By Robert D. San Souci & Illustrated by Brian Pinkey

In this African American folktale, Sukey runs away to her secret place by the ocean. There, she calls up Mama Jo, a beautiful black mermaid. Mama Jo's got a surprise for Sukey; a magical kingdom beneath the sea without time or pain. But it's also without people. Is it really better than the world above? (Mama beware: Quite old-fashioned in places, for instance around the theme of marriage / dowry I change the language when reading to kids). Ages 5+

Written by Sasha Quinton & Illustrated by Brigette Barrager & Photos by Michel Tcherevkoff
This sweet story encourages children to use their imagination. Florabelle is constantly imagining that she is fabulous and flamboyant character - to the frustration of her family. But one day the playtime of pretend serves her well as she conquers her fear. My kind of book - always encourage imagination! Ages 4+

Ganesha's Sweet Tooth

By Sanjay Patel & Emily Haynes
This beautifully illustrated book is inspired by the Hindu legend of Ganesha and the epic poem Mahabharata. Munching on sweets, the boy with an elephant head breaks his tusk on a jawbreaker. He uses the tusk to help write the poem, and it is so beautiful that he even forgets about the sweets! Ages 4+
